Nutrition And Stress

Most people would accept the connection between nutrition and stress. Eat good healthy foods, your body functions better, and you can handle more stress in your day to day life without going under. Makes sense right?

Well there could be a whole lot more to it than that. How healthy is the food we are eating and do we really know or care to find out?

I recently watched the new documentary Food, Inc and it really made me think. It seems that our modern way of producing cheap food to feed our large and growing population falls way short of the mark in terms of quality. Not only that, it could be downright dangerous for our health.

From a stress management perspective, our body functions better when it doesn't have to work too hard to eliminate all the bad stuff we put in it. If it functions better, we are generally less stressed. It seems our diet of high fructose corn syrup, genetically modified foods, hormone laden dairy products, refined carbohydrates, and meat that is mass produced in feed lots and fed antibiotics can have some pretty harmful effects. It is estimated that one in three people in the USA born after the year 2000 will suffer from the early onset of diabetes because of our great American diet and the way our food is produced.

The documentary makes a strong case for changing this situation by voting with your food dollars. Only buy food that is good for you. To do that you need to know where your food comes from and how it is produced. Watching Food,Inc will shed a little more light on that and will also probably surprise most people.

Regardless of weather you are a meat eater or a vegetarian, only eat good quality food and you will be a lot healthier, get better nutrition, and be less stressed.
