Beginers tears

by Shannon
(Sydney)

2 years ago, I started doing Bikram yoga with no prior yoga experience. On my third session I felt tight across my chest and panicked as I couldn't breathe. I lay down on my mat and chocked back tears for 10 mins before leaving. Overwhelmed by the experience, I didn't return.
Last week I began taking yoga classes at my gym. Again, in my third lesson, the tears began during a neck stretch. They rolled down my face for a good 15 minutes before I had to stop and lay down.
My teacher explained this emotional release and to learn more and confirm that I'm not crazy, I'm googling away.
Do these experiences mean that I have some issues that perhaps I'm not dealing with or my body and mind are less connected? My friend has been doing yoga for years and not felt this, It's scary when it's happening to me so early in my yoga experience. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Blessing

I think what is happening with you in your practice is a gift. It is amazing that you are all ready feeling your yoga so deeply. If you are uncomfortable in a class setting, try some DVDs or videos on the computer so that you can let it all out without feeling self-conscious. Your story is wonderful. I hope you stick with it and embrace the good that yoga is doing in your body and spirit.

Yoga and Emotions
by: Anonymous

What happened is perfectly natural. Your body and mind are connected and you are not always aware of the connection. As you relax doing yoga, it is common for emotions to come to the surface. This is a good thing and can be very healing. Our emotions if fully felt and given space to release, can help us better understand aspects of ourselves that might otherwise stay hidden. In turn this can enable us to life a fuller and richer life and be more in touch with who we really are and what is important to us in life.

I'm not sure where you are located but you might want to think about getting a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Session. Here is a link to a directory of practitioners. http://pryt.com/directory/directory.html

Good luck.

by: Ken Lidden

Hi Shannon

Ken from Perth, then Sydney and now Boston. Have had my own experience that lead me on my own journey. The owner of this web site facilitated my tears, so to speak.

More than happy to chat with you either via email or telephone. Still have contacts in Sydney that could help you explore some more.

I wish you all the best, and hope that your tears encourage you to experience the wonderful benefits that yoga has to offer.

kind regards
Ken Lidden
